Q&A: Period Sex

Q&A: Period Sex

"I feel like I get really horny during my period. I worry about having sex because of the mess but it’s so frustrating because it just feels like the time I am most turned on. Is this normal? Surely that’s the time you should feel least aroused? What’s the deal?"

Hi there,

Many thanks for your email!

Good news – it’s perfectly normal to feel extra frisky just before or during your period. Levels of the hormone progesterone are at their lowest during that time of the month. This means that your levels of horniness equal that of a teenage boy!

Also, as the body retains more water just before your period, you may feel extra pressure from the bladder on the G-spot. This could translate to feelings of increased arousal and pelvic heaviness. For many, this means easier orgasms. A definite win, we're sure you'll agree!

Solutions for avoiding messy period sex

  • Using soft sponge tampons during sex takes care of any unwanted drippage. pop the soft sponge in, enjoy yourself and change to your usual type of sanitary product after. The sponge sits at the top of the vaginal canal, soaking up any blood. A sponge is so soft it won't be felt during sex.
  • Pop a towel under you – this trick is great for days with low flow.
  • Have sex in the shower – let the water wash away the blood whilst you concentrate on having fun!
  • Find out if partner/s enjoys your period – some people love period sex. Your time of the month could be an unexpected bonus!

Period sex can relieve cramps and backache

Having sex on your period could make it easier to have orgasms as you're extra horny. Orgasms can help relieve cramps and back pain, so in our opinion, it’s a win-win situation!

We hope that puts your mind at rest. Don’t worry about it – just get on with having lots of hot sex!

    Lots of love,

    Team Sh! xx
