Vibrator Volume Explained

A guide to how we rate our toys for noisiness and why quiet is not always best! 

On each product page, below the product description, you'll find the toy's "Technical Info" where we give you all the practical knowledge you might need to make an informed decision about your new toy.

Is the sound a vibe makes vitally important to you? Do you live with your mother? Have thin walls? Kids in the next room? Of course no one wants toys that sound like a light aircraft, but the fact is (despite what some vibrator packaging claims) anything with a motor will never be completely silent. If your toy requires batteries or power from the electricity supply then it will make some sound, even if it's just the slightest hum.

Whilst the sound a vibrator makes is important to all of us, some of us have more reason to scout for a really quiet toy. Nothing comes without a price though and the downside to a super-quiet toy is usually that it will have a less powerful buzz, fewer functions, or be more fragile than its powerful counterparts.

We've spent time sound testing each toy at top power with an accurate digital decibel meter and grouped them into the following categories so you know exactly what to expect:

• Extra Quiet [almost silent, or on a low frequency, unlikely to be heard from outside the duvet] • Quiet [slight hum, not audible from across the room] • Medium [like a mobile phone vibrating, but unlikely to be heard from the next room] • Value Intensity More!  [makes a noise that may be faintly audible from the next room, turn up the music and enjoy that sheer power!]

Please don't take these at absolute face value, after all some peeps have thicker duvets and walls than others! Rather than give you a random numerical sound scoring, we figure it's better to give you some sense of the sound a vibrator will make, so that you know exactly what to expect when you excitedly rip open that package from Sh!
