Q&A: What's a Good First Vibrator?

Q&A: What's a Good First Vibrator? - Sh! Women's Store

Hello! I wondered if I could ask for some advice - I would like to buy a vibrator but I have no idea which one to buy. I have never used one on myself (only a partner on me during sex). Is there a particular one that's good to start with? I also am not sure if there are ones that also penetrate? I appreciate your advice! Thanks!

Hey,

Thanks for getting in touch!

This is a common question, and thankfully, we have some experience of helping folks choose their first sex toy!

It can feel overwhelming when you first start looking at vibrators. To make it easier, we have curated a Sex Toys for Beginners’ section on our website. Here, you'll see vibes we think are good for newbies.

There is no need to spend a small fortune on your first vibrator. This one is for you to experiment with, figure out what works for you. Saying that; super-cheap toys can be tempting but will usually be made from unsafe materials. A budget of £20-£30 will get you a good quality first vibrator.

How to choose a first vibrator

Take some time to think about what kind of stimulation you enjoy. Do you prefer intense stimulation or more delicate touches? Does direct contact feel better, or do you like more diffused sensations? You can filter the vibrator pages to show gentle vibrations or much stronger vibes.

It’s also essential to think about safety. We recommend choosing a body-safe and non-porous toy. We only stock body-safe toys, but if you're shopping on a different site, make sure to look out for safe materials like silicone and ABS plastic.

Recommendations for a beginner’s vibrator

It’s good that you already know you’re interested in a sex toy that incorporates penetration, as this gives you a starting point.

The next question is about whether you'd like an internal toy without clitoral stimulation, like the Mini Pink G-spot vibe, for example? Mini Pink is covered in soft silicone and is about 1.5 fingers in girth. This cute vibrator can be used for clitoral stimulation or internal exploration. Just add a little bit of water-based lube and enjoy the sensations.

Using lube makes all sex toy play more comfortable and sensual, so we recommend getting a small bottle of the slidey stuff too.

The Sh! Waterproof Rabbit is a mid-size penetrative toy with bunny ears for clitoral stimulation. The shaft with its rotating beads is about 4.5 inches of what we call playable length (the bit that goes inside) and about 2 fingers in girth. This means this vibe isn't as big as most rabbit vibrators.

This rabbit features two vibrating bunny ears. The ears stimulate the sensitive sides of the clitoris, which, for many women and vulva-owners feel better than direct stimulation.

Keep your new vibe clean and hygienic by washing with sex toy cleaner and warm water after every use.

Have fun!

Best Wishes,

Team Sh! xx
