What your vibrator offers

What your vibrator offers

A guide to the different kinds of sensations a vibrator can offer and how to work out which is best for you.

On every product page, underneath its product description you’ll find a tab for “Technical Info”

This is where we give you all the practical info about a toy that you might need to make an informed decision.

There may be many different vibrators, but essentially there are 4 different types of sensations on offer…

We know that choosing a vibrator, especially if you’ve never tried one before can be bewildering!

Even cherry-picking as we do, we offer over 200, as being the best available ( in our opinion!), with other sites offering 1,000’s more…

So, to make things clearer and to help you cut to the chase, we’ve written short guides to each style of sensation a vibrator can offer you, described the benefits of each;

 Vibrators that offer vibration only

Sh! Bullet Vibrator £10 - A single speed vibrator with 'Wowser' intensity
Sh! Bullet Vibrator (£10) – A single speed vibrator with ‘Wowser’ intensity

Vibration only is the simplest form of pleasure a vibe can give – but sometimes simple is best!

A vibrator that simply buzzes delivers intense stimulation that many erogenous zones of the body enjoy.

For most women, their clitoris is the #1 respondent to this delicious orgasm-inducing pleasure, but other nerve-rich areas that might enjoy it are: nipples, perineum, anus, around the head of his penis and balls.

As the battery power is used solely for vibration, a vibration-only toy can offer the highest levels of intensity with less drain on the batteries.

A vibration-only toy is also likely to be the simplest in terms of design and function, which not only means it’s the easiest to use, but also that there’s a lot less to go wrong with it.

‘Vibration only’ are also the cheapest vibes available, which makes they a great choice if you’ve never tried vibration before and would like to see if your body enjoys the sensation before investing more.

Many vibrators we feature in My First Sex Toy are simple, vibration-only types.

Vibrators that offer dual stimulation

Sh! Waterproof Rabbit Vibrator (£25) Rabbit Vibrators are the most famous stye of dual stimulation vibrator, designed to stimulate intside and your clitoris, all at the same time.
Sh! Waterproof Rabbit Vibrator (£25) Rabbit Vibrators are the most famous stye of dual stimulation vibrator, designed to stimulate intside and your clitoris, all at the same time.

This is the double-whammy pleasure on offer from a vibe that stimulates externally and internally simultaneously. They acn also be called ‘dual-stim’, ‘double stim’ or ‘double pleasure’ vibrators

The most famous incarnation of this style is the Rabbit vibrator; whether called Jack Rabbit, Roger Rabbit, Rampant Rabbit or as Team Sh! renamed her Jessica Rabbit

The offshoot to the main body of the vibe is designed to pleasure your clitoral area, whilst the penetrative shaft pleasures you internally. Sometimes the shaft rotates, sometimes with beads or pearls for added sensation … or sometimes the shaft is fixed.

This style of vibrator is, for many women, an amazing erotic pleasure and can lead to a ‘blended orgasm’ – one that comes from inside and out.

Vibrators that offer different escalating and pulse vibrating patterns

Desire Vibrator £49
Desire Vibrator £49

Whilst some women need a vibrator’s buzz to be constant and steady in order to orgasm, others find that their bodies actually become too accustomed or de-sensitized to the constant and regular vibration from vibration-only toys.

If you’d like your vibe to surprise you, look out for vibrators that offer escalating and pulsating sensations.

Most luxury vibrators use the latest technology to run through a pre-programmed series of different vibrations – this often includes different speeds as well as a range of different functions that will certainly keep you on your toes.

Many of the newest and most luxurious vibes will even remember your favourite setting or let you curate your own pattern, now that’s what we call personalised pleasure!

Vibrators that ‘thrust’ ( or wiggle!)

There have always been ‘thrusting’ vibrators on the market, but most we have rejected as they worked on a piston-action that simply had no longevity.

But a new breed of vibrators have hit the block, created by some of the most respected sex toy manufacturers in the world and these we’ve given our seal of approval.

Fun Factory thrusting vibrators pulse and judder  in subtle a driving forward motion, whereas Lelo wave-action vibrators sensually wiggle in a come-hither motion that’s designed to massage the G-Spot

Vibrator Volume Explained

A guide to how we rate our toys for noisiness and why quiet is not always best!

On each product page, below the product description, you’ll find the toy’s “Technical Info” where we give you all the practical knowledge you might need to make an informed decision about your new toy.

Is the sound a vibe makes vitally important to you? Do you live with your mother? Have thin walls? Kids in the next room? Of course no one wants toys that sound like a light aircraft, but the fact is (despite what some vibrator packaging claims) anything with a motor will never be completely silent. If your toy requires batteries or power from the electricity supply then it will make some sound, even if it’s just the slightest hum.

Whilst the sound a vibrator makes is important to all of us, some of us have more reason to scout for a really quiet toy. Nothing comes without a price though and the downside to a super-quiet toy is usually that it will have a less powerful buzz, fewer functions, or be more fragile than its powerful counterparts.

We’ve spent time sound testing each toy at top power with an accurate digital decibel meter and grouped them into the following categories so you know exactly what to expect:

• Extra Quiet [almost silent, or on a low frequency, unlikely to be heard from outside the duvet]
• Quiet [slight hum, not audible from across the room]
• Medium [like a mobile phone vibrating, but unlikely to be heard from the next room]
• Value Intensity More!  [makes a noise that may be faintly audible from the next room, turn up the music and enjoy that sheer power!]

Please don’t take these at absolute face value, after all some peeps have thicker duvets and walls than others! Rather than give you a random numerical sound scoring, we figure it’s better to give you some sense of the sound a vibrator will make, so that you know exactly what to expect when you excitedly rip open that package from Sh!

How to Choose a Vibrator

Vibrator Intensity Explained

A guide to how we rate our toys for vibration intensity and which might be the best for you.

Underneath every product description you’ll find the toy’s ‘Technical Info’, where we give you all the practical knowledge about a toy that you’ll need to make an informed decision.

Intensity Ratings: In order to give you some idea of how strong your vibe will be, we’ve fired up each vibrating toy with full-power batteries, or charge if it’s a rechargeable toy, and grouped each into one of the following 5 categories:

• Vibrator Intensity: Gentle

• Vibrator Intensity: Medium

• Vibrator Intensity: Strong

• Vibrator Intensity: Wowser: High Intense

• Vibrator Intensity: Wowser: Deep Throbby

How to choose the right vibrator intensity for you

If you’ve never bought a vibrator before it can be hard to judge which is the right intensity for you.

Think about how much hand or tongue stimulation it takes to get you going, or to get you off…

Do you like the lightest of touches or do you need more?

Some women find intense vibration actually has the opposite effect to the desired one; the intensity can often numb rather than stimulate. If this is you, then look for toys that offer Gentle or Medium intensity.

Knowing how to tone things down as well as speed things up can be key to enjoying vibrator sex; many vibes have a fully variable speed dial which lets you control the intensity quickly and easily. Even if your toy only has a single speed, you can easily lessen the intensity of the vibration by wrapping your toy in some material. The important thing to remember is that if your vibrator’s intensity is too strong, you can always tone it down, but conversely you can’t transform a gentle, battery-powered vibrator into a bone-shaking power house.

Vibrators certainly offer fabulous orgasm-inducing power and we’ve lost count of the number of women who have told us that their first orgasm was with a vibe, which is why diversity in intensity is so important.

If you’ve never had an orgasm before, or find it really difficult to orgasm then a vibrator can really help to take you there. If you do find orgasms elusive, or if you know you enjoy pretty intense stimulation, then look for a toy which offers a Strong or Wowser buzz – we don’t think you’ll regret it!

Here at Sh! we’ve divided our strongest vibrators into two different types of intensity. Wowser: High Intense vibes are buzzy and stronger than strong, but the sensations are high pitched and not rumbly. Wowser: Deep Throbby toys on the other hand do exactly what it says on the tin; rumbling vibrations feel deeply penetrative and are often the key to success for women who need a lot of stimulation to orgasm.
