Shop-Documentary

Documentary Series at Sh! Women’s Erotic Emporium

A new sexual revolution is underway! Sex is no longer a subject to shy away from, and — you might have noticed — sex shops no longer have to be seedy man-holes.

Even gender itself has started to become redundant. And in the age of hashtags (#metoo #timesup), of swiping left and right to fix up dates, the rules of sexual engagement are being rewritten.

Sh! is at the epicentre of all these trends, and since opening 26 years ago has been ahead of the sexual curve — providing a hub for an uninhibited conversation about sex in a warm and safe environment, and championing the women’s perspective.

Which is why we, as a couple of documentary filmmakers, have approached Sh! to develop a TV series about the Emporium. We’d like to find out more about the Sh! clientele, why they shop here, what their experiences have been, and what journeys they’re going on.

Whether you’re straight, gay, trans, pan or bi; whether you’re old or young or something in between; whatever size you are, or shape, or religion, whether you’re able-bodied or indeed tick many of these boxes (Sh! customers assume pretty much every form) we’d love to hear from you.

At this stage we’d like to have strictly off-the-record conversations to find out your story. All conversations will be treated in complete confidence and with absolutely no obligation to take part in any filming.

If you would like to set up a phone call or meet up then please get in touch with the production team at shthedocumentary@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you,

Sex After Rape

Sex After Rape: The Letter

‘I have been to Sh! before, and found it to be a really fantastic experience.

I think it’s better if I’m open and honest about why.

I am a rape survivor and had a really, really difficult time with sex.

After all the emotional recovery was done, I found the sexual recovery even more difficult and lonely.

The reason is that there are services to help you with the way you feel after rape, but after the initial crisis period is over, there’s nothing to help you with the long-term effects such as how it affects the way you feel about sex and your body. It impacted on the way I felt about sex massively.

When I found your shop, it felt like a safe place to explore sex again.

The reason I’m writing is because no one really talks about it, and there is hardly anything on the internet on the subject too, resulting in feeling very alone with this.

Women feel isolated dealing with their sexual recovery afterwards.

[I’ve talked to other rape-survivors] and the interesting thing was, that all  women felt they were abnormal for the sexual problems they were experiencing and had never talked about them before, because they didn’t know where to turn. But many of them were experiencing the same problems, and in some cases exactly the same physical reactions, yet each woman thought she was the only one reacting that way.

I found your shop so helpful. It is the fact that it is female focused that makes it so special for any woman, but especially women who have experienced any sexual violence.

It would be great to talk about how sex can be enjoyed by yourself if that’s what a woman wants, or how it can be pleasurable for a woman and her partner without penetration, because many women find this difficult after rape. I think it would be great to talk about how women can make sex about them again, even after sex has been about violence…

Thank You

We received this letter just before Christmas. It inspires, humbles and fortifies all of us, here at Sh!

It also reminds us in a deeply personal way to say ‘thank-you’ to everyone who chooses to shop at Sh!

By choosing to shop with us ( whether online or at the Sh! store)  you help us to keep our bricks and mortar store, even if it may not make the soundest of commercial sense, as internet-shopping intensifies.

Sexual exploration, expression, renewal or recovery often goes way beyond dabbling with the new FSOG collection or upgrading a bunny and for that to be a positive experience, it often requires one-on-one understanding and guidance ~ something an internet-only company just cannot provide.

This letter, and many others from women who have had an sexual epiphany at Sh!, mostly around learning to orgasm for the first time, confirms why it is *so* important  to keep the Sh! store  truly female-focused by asking guys to come along with a woman, even if that definitely doesn’t make sound commercial sense!

Sometimes it doesn’t just come down to the bottom dollar.

So, Thank You to *everyone* who chooses to shop with Sh!, whether online or in store.

By doing so, you’re helping us to keep our unique environment; a safe, welcoming and empowering place for women and couples to explore, express and enjoy their sexuality.

We appreciate your support.

Support Group.

There’s clearly a need for more  support for women reclaiming their pleasurable sexuality after sexual violence ( Government statistics released in January 2013 estimate that  1 in 5 women (aged 16 – 59) has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16) and we’re talking to our letter-writer about setting up a support group at Sh!

Women should not be left to feel isolated or abnormal. Sexual recovery is as equally important as emotional recovery.

If you would be interested in helping to set up, or attend, such a support group, please email renee@sh-womenstore.com, in the strictest of confidence, as always, at Sh!

If you’ve been a victim of rape or sexual assault, Rape Crisis have a Freephone helpline 0808 802 9999 open from 12 – 2.30pm & 7 – 9.30pm.

Note:.
* we had to change/cut the letter a little to retain anonymity. The words in [brackets] are ours. Everything else is in her words entirely.

Open Evening for Health Professionals

Dear friends, colleagues and those new to Sh!,

Over the past 21 years we have fostered links with many NHS departments, sex & relationship therapists, psycho-sexual therapists, GPs and special nurses. We have been able to offer advice on the range of erotic playthings available, how they are used and cared for, and how the can be of particular benefit to women experiencing sexual difficulties or discomfort. Many therapists have informally “referred” patients to us or kept a stock of our flyers for women to take home.

We would love to see you at our Open Evening for Doctors, Nurses, Therapists and other professionals within women’s sexual health services on Tuesday 10th September 6-8pm. Founder & MD Kathryn Hoyle will give a short talk on the importance of enhancing sexuality for all women, including those living with sexual limitations and Team Sh! will be on hand with refreshments and goodie bags for guests.

Feel free to share this invite with your colleagues.

If you are unable to join us for the Open Evening but would like flyers to be sent to your clinic, please email us at Shop@sh-womenstore.com.

Very best wishes,
Team Sh!

May at Sh!

What’s been happening at Sh! Women’s Erotic Emporium this May!

By Joanna

Can you believe it’s the end of May already? It may have been a (mostly) dark and dismal month, but there’s been plenty going on at Sh! Towers to keep us busy…

We have learnt so much from some *amazing* women who have taught at our Sh! Hoxton store in May. Earlier in the month, the fabulous Mollena Williams visited us on her European Tour with two kinky classes aimed at both kink-virgins and those folks already playing on the BDSM scene. We were also contacted by the Australian bundle-of-dynamite that is Cyndi Darnell for a sell-out class on Female Arousal Anatomy. Both Mollena and Cyndi gave us plenty of food for thought, and we look forward to another visit in the near future!

Speaking of Mollena, we also nominated Playing Well With Others as our May Book of the Month. Mollena Williams and Lee Harrington co-wrote this amazing book, which describes itself as the “Field Guide to Navigating the BDSM and Kink Community” (but we think it is more like a guide to life).

Bondage Bow
Bondage Bow

The Rare Assembly Bondage Bow was our May Toy of the Month ~ congratulations to the winner of this gorgeous latex treat. These seemingly innocent latex bows can be unravelled for lots of kinky fun.

If you’re more saucy siren than girly girl, you’ll *love* our new Black Rose BDSM range. From soft cuffs and blindfolds to naughty mouth bits, there is something for everyone. All packaged in purple and black, this beautifully designed and fully functioning equipment is a must for your kinky cupboard.

Also new in this month ~ Our best-selling lubricant Lush Pure and Lush Pure + has arrived in new little handbag size! We *love* lube here at Sh! and recommend everyone keeps at least one travel-sized bottle of lube handy at all times…

We’ve had some super-hot Filthy Friday fun this month! Every Friday, we offer our blog readers *free* erotica, and May has been no exception. Alison Tyler, K L Gillespie, Bebe Balocca, Ella and Plumptious Pea have all shared free smut, and we love them for it! <3

Brownie‘Ask, and you shall receive!’ ~ We called out for emergency cake, and the lovely @EA_Unadorned sent us some absolutely delicious Cookie Dough Brownies from @Wraggamuffins #Thankyousomuch!

One of our main competitors stopped by earlier this week. He complimented us on our fabulous store, and even wanted to take pix of our exclusive FetiSh! range, made by our very own Sh! Pixies in our London warehouse.

On Thursday we hosted a fabulously fun Loyalty Card Holders Party. There was bubbly, and cupcakes, and the ladiez from AnnaKarenina Corsetry were on hand to fit customers into their beautiful custom-made corsets.

Lastly, but by not means least… we’ve been filming in store with the fabulous Kathryn Hoyle for the Sh! Women’s Erotic Emporium website so look out for some new videos on the site in the coming weeks!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

January at Sh!

January at Sh! is typically cold, dull and generally the most unsatisfying month of the year ~ so the Sh! Girlz have been working hard in store and online to make the snowy, dreary days far more exciting!

All month we been looking back at 2012 on the blog and chatting about our favourite toys of the past year. We’ve mused over the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon and lusted over the gorgeous toys it produced, amongst many other fabulous products. With that in mind, we are looking forward to what 2013 will bring…

The 2013 erotic classes started with a bang (or should that be a ‘blow’), with the popular Blow His Mind workshop. Renee and Joanna were joined by a group of lovely ladies, to discuss all things fellatio, whilst enjoying a glass of bubbly and the ever-present cupcakes.

Our favourite comments from class:

“Yay! One for each hand” ~ Our lovingly handmade pink Sh! dildos caused quite a stir

“He’s so big, I need two hands to w*nk him off” ~ we’re not sure this needs an explanation 😉

“I’m soo gagging for it!” ~ Libido shot through the roof during the class

Joanna also ran the Orgasmic! Erotic Class the following, teaching women the art of the orgasm, as well as showing off some of our most sought after goodies. In true Sh! style, everyone enjoyed bubbly and cupcakes, whilst learning the finer details of the female anatomy.

Ladies who attended the class, strutted out with tips and tricks to try out as soon as they got home.

Looking to expand your sexual repertoire, or brush up on technique? Our erotic classes are just what you’re looking for! Next month’s Blow His Mind class is *already* sold out, so book onto our March workshop to avoid any disappointment. Our very special Fifty Shades of Kinky Sensuality Erotic Class uses products from the Official Fifty Shades Pleasure Collection, and is surely the perfect Valentines gift for the woman who has everything…

The Dragon King’s Daughter sensual exhibition ‘The Devil is in the Detail’ mixes fun photography with punchy poetry. Throughout January we’ve been lucky enough to have this cheeky exhibition in store, and if you’ve had a chance to visit we’re sure you will agree!

The first Sh! Loyalty Card Holder Party was a huge hit with lots of new customers signing up for the Sh! Loyalty Card. If you sign up for a Loyalty Card in store, you’ll be lucky enough to receive a 20% discount at the next Loyalty Card Holders Party (February 28th).

Last night, the talented Molly Moore opened her photography exhibition, here at the Hoxton store. The Sh! Girlz had great fun meeting all the wonderful guests, and we look forward to seeing you all soon. We’re thrilled to have such an exciting exhibition up on our pink walls.

Have a fabulous February! Keep checking out the blog ~ coming up over the next couple of weeks we’ve got some of our favourite gift ideas for Valentines Day!

Sh! named ‘Most Innovative Retailer’ at ETO Awards 2012

Yes it’s true, for the second year running Sh! has snagged the Most Innovative Retailer title at the prestigious ETO Awards, and we could not be happier!

Most Innovative Retailer 2012 is a welcome addition to the Sh! awards shelf, which is getting pretty crowded if we do say so ourselves (SO much dusting).

It felt real as soon as it was Tweeted!
It felt real as soon as it was Tweeted!

Only half way through the year, Sh! has already scooped Best Shopping Venue, and (the big one) Best Business of the Year at the 2012 Qype Business Awards. This ETO award, the trade body for the erotic industry, is the icing on the cake!

Team Sh! are thrilled that our  Hoxton Store has been recognized for the second year running as the pioneer that it is. What with manufacturing our own toys, hosting ground breaking classes & exhibitions, raising money for charities and working tirelessly to raise awareness about women’s sexuality, Sh! is much, much more than just a shop.

2012 is shaping up to be the year of big wins in our quest to paint the town pink, and we are so incredibly grateful to everyone who has nominated and voted for us!

Keep those fingers and toes crossed that more accolades will come our way in the second half of the year, and in the mean time, come on down to one of our many July events (see the diary here) to share the champers!
