Q&A: How to Use a Rabbit Vibrator?

Dear Sh!

This is a bit embarrassing, but here goes... My best friend is buying me a rabbit vibrator for my birthday - and I've never used one before. I don't want to ask her about how to use a rabbit vibrator! I've not had much sex either, so I wondered if I'll be able to enjoy a rabbit vibrator, or should I ask her for vouchers instead? Will my rabbit vibrator come with instructions? Hope you can help!

Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch!

First of all, do not panic. It doesn't matter if you've had lots of sex or not; toys can still be great fun! There is no right or wrong way to enjoy solo play, just your way.

Generally, the instructions on the box are practical. It will cover what kind of batteries your rabbit vibe needs and what the buttons do.  Luckily, we know our way around rabbit vibes, so here are our tips on how to start playing with your rabbit.

As vibration will be a new experience for you, we suggest taking some time to explore your gift. Wait until you’ve got the house to yourself, turn off the phone, and give yourself lots of relaxed, uninterrupted time to really explore the sensations.

Before you start, familiarise yourself with all settings. Rabbit vibrators usually have 2 different buttons or sliders:

  • One controls the vibration of the bunny-shaped external clitoral stimulator
  • One controls the sensations of the shaft

Taking some time to learn how to press the right buttons will make sure the vibrator presses your buttons too!

How to use a rabbit vibrator

How you use your rabbit vibe is all about exploring what feels good for you.

Some people think that a rabbit vibrator is too complicated for a first vibe, but this isn’t so. In fact, because it offers a lot of different sensations, a rabbit is actually a great first vibe for exploring what you do like, what you love and what you can leave…

Basically, a rabbit has a rotating shaft for penetration and an external vibrator for clitoral stimulation. The beads inside the shaft provide a massaging sensation inside the vagina, and the twirling motion can also stimulate the G-spot.

For most women, the magic lies in the clitoral stimulator. The vibrating rabbit ears work so well because they can sit on either side of the clitoris, delivering vibration that’s indirect but intense. In fact, many of our customers have told us this is the only part of the rabbit vibe they play with. I.e they don’t use the shaft portion of their during masturbation.

Explore clitoral stimulation first

Start out by exploring just the sensations of the bunny ears on and around your clitoris (without using the shaft). This makes it easier to experiment and hone in on the pleasure. Play around to discover what angle feels best, how intense you want the vibrations, and whether you prefer steady vibes or pulses.

If there is one ‘complaint’ we hear about rabbit vibes, it’s that they can make you orgasm too quickly. With this in mind, it would be fair to assume you might not even make it to the shaft discovery at first, and that's perfectly fine. Just enjoy the journey!

We always recommend using a water-based lubricant with sex toys, as it makes everything smoother, sleeker and way more sensual. Coat your vulva and the parts of the vibrator that will come into contact with your delicate bits (so not the handle), and wipe off any excess.

Rabbit vibrators can deliver blended orgasms

A blended orgasm feels like it comes from both inside and from your clitoris at the same time.

When you’re ready, slip the lubed-up beaded shaft inside you. This doesn’t have to be on your first go or even on your 10th. Just whenever you feel like trying it.

The shaft of the rabbit vibe rotates and gives a swirling feeling inside the vagina. The moving beads stimulate just inside the opening, where most of the nerve endings are. It’s a massaging sensation you will never have felt before and totally worth exploring because it’s this, coupled with the clitoral bunny thrills, that offers the chance of a blended orgasm.

Using a rabbit (or any vibrator) in a ‘thrusting’ motion is the stuff of porn films. In our experience, it’s not a big thing in most women’s solo sex repertoire. Instead, the vibe is held in place to do its fabulous whirling massage, with less manual movement.

At 1.25 inch diameter, the shaft of the Sh! Rabbit Vibrator is slimmer than most vibrators, so it’s ideal as a first rabbit. The controls are easy to use.

  • Button 1: Controls 12 different clit stim settings, including low to high vibration, escalating, different pulse patterns
  • Button 2: Controls the 3 speeds on the shaft
  • Button 3: Controls the two-way shaft rotation

Hi there,

Many thanks for your email.

Firstly, may we apologise for the time it has taken for us to reply – we get so many emails!

Relaxation and time is important. Make sure you have time to yourself (turn your phone off, make sure flatmates are out for the day etc), and this also includes your partner. This is easier to do by yourself, to begin with. That way you don’t have to worry if your partner is having a great time or not, and you can just concentrate on your own body.

Arousal starts in the brain, so it’s a great idea to read erotica (we have many great titles written by women for women) or download some porn if you prefer.

Lubrication is really important, and in your case we’d recommend a nice thick, water-based lube like our Pure Plus. It’s almost like hair gel in consistency, and it offers “padding” to make everything softer and slidier.

We would recommend starting off small – very small. We sell vibrators (like Sh! Discreet) that are no bigger than a finger, and these are very good for training/dilating. The vibration can really help relax tense muscles, but it’s important to take baby steps. To start off with, you might not even want to put the vibrator inside ~ which is perfectly ok. It’s about learning to relax, and letting your body tell you when it’s ready. You may only put a small bit (the tip) inside, and that’s perfectly ok too. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint.

Over time (marathon, remember!), you’ll feel more confident and will be able to insert more of the toy. When it begins to feel almost “too easy”, it’s time to move up to a sightly girthier toy, maybe a vibe that’s 1.5-2 fingers wide in girth. Then you do the same again. Over time, your vaginal muscles will become accustomed to penetration, and hopefully your brain will recognise it as something pleasurable. At this point, and only at this point, is it time to attempt penetration with your partner. Trying too soon will ensure that the vaginismus kicks in, and the brain will think of sex as something painful.

Best of luck, and let us now how you get on!

Hi,
I would really appreciate your advice re vibrators. I am currently undergoing psychosexual therapy, and my therapist has advised me to get a vibrator to ‘do some work by myself.’ I find penetration quite difficult, and have worked through problems with vaginismus. Although I can tolerate penetration without pain now, I don’t seem to derive much pleasure from it, and during intercourse with my partner, any sexual arousal and pleasure I derive from clitoral stimulation in foreplay is wiped out when penetration takes place. I have always been able to reach orgasm on my own through purely clitoral stimulation. I’ve had vibrators in the past, but they lived in the drawer for a few years, then got thrown away. I found them a bit scary! I would be very grateful for any help or advice you can give,
Many thanks.

Gwen
