Choosing Your First Dildo

Choosing Your First Dildo - Sh! Women's Store

This blog post is all about how to choose your first dildo.

Buying your very first dildo is exciting and scary in equal measure. What seems like easy, fun shopping suddenly becomes overwhelming. There are so many to choose from! And until you've tried one, you won't know what you like, so the scope for getting it wrong is getting bigger.

The good news is that you are here, and we have lots of experience when it comes to pairing peeps with dildos - there really is a dildo for everyone :)

The first thing you need to consider when choosing a first dildo is what you want from it.

Seems obvious (orgasms!), but bear with us:

  • Is it for you to enjoy, or for a partner's pleasure, or for both of you to play with together?
  • Are you on the same wavelength when it comes to length and girth?
  • Are you looking for a G-spot toy, a P-spot toy, or an old-fashioned dong without extras?
  • Do you want it to vibrate or would the buzz be annoying?
  • And what about colours - what colour do you like?

At Sh! we’ve got everything from sleek dildos to perfectly curved G-Spot dildos and pretty much everything in between (except for the ones with built-in balls, we don't have those. Soz.).

Every dildo is designed to offer a variety of sensations, whether slender and rippled, or ample and twirly. Give yourself some time to browse through our selection of silicone dildos here. Making a list of pros and cons can help you think about what it is you really like.

Whilst the primary job of a dildo is penetrative pleasure, a dildo with clit stimulator will offer double stimulation so if you're a fan of rabbit vibes, we recommend giving those types of dildos some extra attention.

Choosing the Right Sized  Dildo

Size is the most crucial consideration when choosing your first dildo, with width rather than length being the imperative factor. You can control how deep you go, but attempting to introduce a plus-size toy into a petite orifice is likely to induce yelps of rejection rather than moans of desire.

Whether this is a first dildo for yourself or a lover, a little research is worth its weight in silicone which is the best material for sex toys. Silicone is velvety-smooth with non-porous ‘skin’ that quickly warms up to body temperature. Silicone is also hypoallergenic and very easy to clean.

The best way to assess the ‘right fit’ is to focus on how many fingers feel good when really turned on.

The vagina expands and makes more space for fingers, penises or dildos when a woman or vulva-owner gets turned on. The number of fingers that feel right when you're at this stage is the right girth dildo to go for. When you loop your thumb and forefinger around the desired digits, you can measure the diameter and get a pretty accurate idea of perfect girth.

Whilst depth can be controlled, for some womxn, a dildo that is too long or straight can feel uncomfortable if it bumps against their cervix. If this is you (or your partner), choosing a dildo with a rounded tip and G-spot-friendly curves will likely be more comfortable.

For hand-held or thigh harness play, the whole length of the dildo is at your disposal.

When slipping a dildo into a hip harness like our double strap harness, a couple of inches of the length of your dildo can be lost. Curvy tums & bums tend to get in the way, so you may need a slightly longer dildo for truly satisfying strokes.

Most of our dildo styles follow the same formula: 3 lengths in two different widths.

This means you can confidently start with something smallish, like Wirly 2. Then, then should you want to size up at a later point, you have three options within the same range:

• If you feel comfortable with the width but want more length, you can size up to the Wirly 3.
• If you feel comfortable with the length but want more girth, you can size up to the Wirly 5.
• If you'd like more length and a little more width, the Wirly 6 will offer both.

Add a Buzz to Your Dildo

Once you've made your choice, it's time to think about whether you'd like vibration. Every dildo in the Sh! silicone dildo range comes in vibrating versions with a small bullet vibrator in a pocket in the base of the dildo. As silicone transmits vibration really well, both the receiver and the operator will feel the buzz from the dildo.

As 70%+ of women say they find it hard or impossible to orgasm through penetration alone, having a buzzing option to turn on is totally worth considering

Choosing a dildo is a personal choice

When it comes down to it, choosing your first dildo is a very personal choice.

We can provide all the dimensions, colour options, and sensory descriptions possible, but only you know what turns you on, what gets you going, and what sensations spin you out during sex with your lover, so only you can choose something that fits – literally!

The most important thing to remember is that you’re in complete control of your dildo, and you get to choose what’s best for you. It’s your body and your sexual experience, so go with what you want rather than what you think you should. Porn dildos are all well and good, but for the majority of us, they’re more useful as kinky bedroom decorations than for actual bedtime use...
