A Taste of Molly... Interview with Molly Moore

A Taste of Molly... Interview with Molly Moore - Sh! Women's Store

Today we’re interviewing our fabulous February artist Molly Moore. Molly’s exhibition 'A Taste of Molly' will be running at Sh! Women’s Erotic Emporium, Hoxton on 1-28th February, 12-8pm, Monday-Sunday. There’ll be a Preview Party on February 1st, 6-8pm, where you can meet Molly and ask all the questions we didn’t…

So, Molly, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Oh I hate these questions as I never really know where to start. I am the author of the UK's highest ranked sex blog, Molly's Daily Kiss. My blog is a marriage of words and images and most of my writing and photography is based on my own experiences and contains strong autobiographical content. I am the creator of The Pussy Pride Project; a celebration of all that is wonderful about pussies and also Sinful Sunday; a project to encourage bloggers to have fun with their cameras creating erotic images. I never really know whether to tell people I am photographer or a writer although someone just told me that what I do is a form of performance art so maybe I will adopt that label from now on!?

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Only 3? Wonderfully wanton weirdo!

What inspired you to start creating photographic art?

Without a doubt blogging. I found that my words really came to life when I paired them with my own images. It started as an illustration project and really blossomed from there.

How would you describe your style?

I think opportunistic would be a great word for what I do. I tend to take my camera everywhere with me and I create my art as I go, the world and people around me have a great impact on what I do as well as my everyday life. I rarely use a studio; it is too controlled and contrived for me in general. I tend to like something more immediate and real.

Tell us a bit more about what inspired your exhibition at Sh!

I have been contemplating having an exhibition for a while now and then I saw Sh! tweeting about looking for artists for 2013 and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Finding venues is a tough thing and without places like Sh! to support artists like me it can be hard to get your work seen. I am immensely grateful and proud to be hosting my first show at Sh!

What do you feel inspires you as a photographic artist?

My work is very self portrait focused at present and so my inspiration is my life, my thoughts, my D/s relationship with my husband and my own personal challenges to myself. Sometimes I want to show the sexy me, or the sensual me, or the vulnerable me, the deviant me, the dark me, the mysterious me... my photography allows me to explore all of this as well as my relationship with myself but also my relationship with the viewer.

Who inspires you as a photographic artist?

I look at a LOT of other artists work and it often sparks ideas or inspires me to give something a try but in general I am inspired by life. My photography is very experimental, I have found that just giving it a go can lead to interesting results and also helps me to constantly learn what does and doesn't work. As well as this, the Scavenger Hunt project, which is about taking erotic images in public places has certainly been a huge inspiration and focus in quite a lot of my work on my blog.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am always working; my camera is always with me. Up until this last week or so I have been very focused on getting my images mounted and framed ready for this exhibition. I decided to do it all myself, with the help of my very wonderful husband, and so we have been teaching ourselves how to cut mounting board. One of the things I wanted to do with this exhibition was to try to use recycled frames that I have picked up in charity shops, vintage markets etc... I wanted it to have that eclectic feel that comes about when you gather things together because they catch your eye. Maybe I should have called the exhibition 'Caught your eye'.

Do you have any words of advice for aspiring artists?

The one thing I have learnt about photography is that you can never ever take too many pictures. Every single one will teach you something about the next one. As a photographer you are constantly learning and when you are the subject of most of your own work you also find that every image teaches you something about yourself. Don't be scared to learn all those things.

My other piece of advice is to have fun. Have fun taking the images and have fun editing them. I don't photoshop my images in the sense that I don't change anything about me but I do like to play with colours, lights and effects. Sometimes turning an image black and white, or introducing a colour splash can transform a photograph and really help you to focus the viewers eye on the story of the image.

Thank you for sharing your time with us Molly! We are looking forward to your exhibition.
