Sh! was founded in 1992 by an all woman crew after a chardonnay~emboldeded trip around London’s sex shops had revealed the desperate need for change. With only £700 and a tin of pink paint to invest; the "Sh! Girlz" dream was to create an inviting place with clued-up, sensitive staff, where women could shop for good quality, erotic playthings without feeling awkward, unwelcome or embarrassed. A fresh alternative to Soho sleaze and scratchy scarlet panties ...
As the UK's first and only store exclusively dedicated to women's
sexual pleasure, we're helping to create a world where women can
express and enjoy their sexuality to the max. There's no such thing as a typical Sh! customer and the diversity of a
Sh! day makes our jobs as stimulating as the toys we sell. Women aged 18
~ 80 shop at Sh!, of every sexuality, ethnicity and orgasmic capability.
Some breeze in with all the confidence of girl-power, whilst others
clearly take a trip round the block and a few deep breaths to get
through the door. Men are more than welcome to visit, accompanied by a
woman, or to call us for advice and they seem to enjoy our relaxed,
non-judgemental atmosphere almost as the women it was created for....
From our humble beginnings and a staff of one, we now comprise of 20+
caring and knowledgable 'Sh! Girlz' whose mission is to deliver
unrivalled levels of service, produce fab quality playthings, offer
unpushy and personalized advice, keep abreast of all matters
sexual and safer-sexual, and last but not least , to serve a decent
cuppa to those who visit our store.
Safer as well as hot sex is our message and we deliver it across the UK
as part of the Sh! Sex Toy Workshops we give to student, LBGT and youth
groups. We wrote the introduction to sex toys and safer sex for the
Oxford University Student Guide. With the rise of STD's at an all time
high, our work is by no means done and we continue to pledge our
commitment to spreading clear-cut, practical advice.
Through our talks and workshops on women's sexuality to health
professionals, we are pioneering links between the so-called erotic
industry and the NHS and we now work with over 20 different NHS trusts
throughout the UK. We gave a seminar at the 2003 International
Sexology Conference in Cuba and were invited to present our findings at
the 2004 International Sexology Conference in Brighton. Vibrators
were first developed as medical equipment to help cure women of hysteria by inducing hysterical paroxysm ~ in other words ~ orgasm!
The watchword today is not hysterial but women's sexual dysfunction and
though we've come a long way since George Taylor's steam-powered
vibrator in 1869, we feel it's important to bring the vibrator back,
without blushing, to the medical world.
Sh! has been awarded Ethical Consumer status (www.ethicalconsumer.org)
for our informed and information-giving standpoint on sextoys. We also
won the 2005 Erotic Oscar Special Judges Award ( www.
erotic-awards.co.uk) for being 'the best sex shop in town ~ possibly
the world!'
Our proudest moments, though are always the most personal ~ the letters
and emails from our customers on the joys of discovering new pleasures:
