Sex Toy Matyerial: Jelly/PVC

The pros and cons of jelly/pvc toys...
Soft, colourful material often containing phthalates

Way back when the sex industry was solely a boys-club there were 2 choices in adult sex toys and one was Jelly - they made everything out of it!. There's still a wide choice but jelly adult toys are becoming less popular as concerns over phthalates come to light.

Pros
• Soft, squishy feel
• Cheap
• Colourful
• Some great designs that are just not available in any other material at the moment

Cons
• Usually contain phthalates to a lesser or greater degree.
• Porous - cannot be disinfected
• Material eventually "breaks down" so jelly sex toys will have a shorter lifespan than hard plastic or silicone sex toys.
• Jelly toys can contain latex and so aren't recommended for people with a latex allergy

Care & Cleaning
Best cover them with a condom, but in any case use only water-based lubes with jelly toys. Clean with mild soap and water (harsh soaps/washing up liquid can start to dissolve the surface). Better still use a special toy cleaner like Sh! Toy Cleaner, but in any case be meticulous to be sure the toy’s absorbent surfaces are totally clean. Dry thoroughly and store in a cool, dry, fluff-free place, away from sunlight and any other toys. As jelly toys can react weirdly with sunlight and other sex toys causing the surface to breakdown/melt or fuse with other toys.

Is a Jelly sex toy a good choice for you?

Jelly is quite a pretty material and adult toys made from it can be all colours of the rainbow. Jelly is easy to identify; translucent with tiny bubbles running through it. Vibes like the Original Jessica Rabbit, the All-in-1 Jessica Rabbit Vibe and the Waterproof Jessica Rabbit are made from jelly.

Jelly is a soft, squishy material which is a mix of PVC and Phthalate Softeners. PVC is totally safe, but phthalates, though widely used in mainstream cosmetics, have recently raised heath concerns. Phthalates have been associated with negative health effects. However, not all adult sex toys made from jelly are the same. Different grades of PVC/phthalates are used in adult toy manufacture: the more phthalates, the more your toy will give off a chemical smell and have an oily feel. Check out the Phthalates Alert in the Tech Spec Box, the middle footer box on each product page, to find out how phthalates heavy any of our toys are. Unfortunately, the sex toy industry is slow to catch up with the latest scientific research, and so many great designs, like the famous Rabbit Vibes, are still mainly available in Jelly, and many women decided to not miss out on the pleasures the rabbit has to offer, so we continue to stock them. However, for your protection & peace of mind we do recommend covering jelly toys with a standard condom or a latex-free condom like Avanti (Jelly can contain latex).

Especially new jelly adult toys can feel sticky and smell strongly, this is the chemicals "off-gassing". This can be a bit off-putting but the pong will generally lessen after a while.

Jelly is pretty porous, (meaning it will both absorb and disclose substances) so it's good to use an extra squirt of lube, like our own Lush Lube as your own juices can be somewhat absorbed by the toy.

Overall Verdict
Jelly is a good choice for a cheapish, pretty sex toy, the design or functions of which you may not be able to get in another material, but not great if you're concerned about chemicals in your toys.
