"Olisbos" were sold by merchants in ancient Greece, made out of stone, leather and wood. Dildos are certainly the oldest adult toy around. Until the late 19th century brought the the electromagnetic vibrator, the sole means of pleasuring with a toy was by dildo. Dildos featured in early “stag” adult films of the 20’s onwards, as did the early vibrators. This associated both with the burgeoning "adult" industry, which gave them a sleazy reputation which caused dildos & vibrators to disappear from “public” view until the early seventies.

Dildos are still shaking off the “un-natural” and “penis-replacement” image that has dogged them in the 20thC.
